Upcycled Lighting

Creating lights from vintage or discarded items is not just a simple matter of fixing a light fitting and cable, but one of ensuring that the original character and individuality of an item is retained and that the addition of lighting does not detract from the items original form and function.

Often items can sit in my workshop for weeks or months while I consider how and what is the most appropriate position and method of wiring and fitting the lighting, which can often change once I start work on the piece.

Cleaning and repairing vintage and discarded items before converting them into lights is nearly always required, as they are often are extremely dirty and damaged. Part of the character and charm of an up-cycled light is the patina the piece brought about through extended use and age and I have to remember not to over clean a piece so that this patina of age and the subsequent character of the light isn’t lost.
